The Links at Fancourt is certainly a worthy contender for South Africa’s best golf course. From the moment you arrive it feels a little bit special and that feeling continues throughout your round, although it could get mixed with frustration and fear of running out of golf balls…
We were fortunate enough to play the Links in relatively benign conditions but anything more than a gentle breeze and it could start getting unpleasant! The course is in immaculate condition and a real joy to walk around (as a visitor this is your only option, only members of the Links can take carts). Although as Links style courses go it doesn’t feel quite as natural as St Francis Links.
The playing surfaces and even the hazards and rough are pretty close to perfect. The greens have fantastic surfaces and are true and fast, which would be great if they were flat! There are plenty of undulations to keep you on your toes, even if you aren’t far from the hole.
Our overall impression of the Links is that it is definitely a must play for everybody but your experience may well vary substantially depending on how you play and what the weather conditions were like. It is an incredibly tough golf course, combine that with a long walk and you may get to the 18th feeling quite beaten up! So if you enjoy a gentle stroll with your mates and not losing too many balls then this might not be your cup of tea. However, if you enjoy a real test of golf and pitting your skills against a course that fights back then you’ll love the Links.
